Paul Lewis, Professor of English at Boston College, is the author of two
books on humor-Cracking Up: American Humor in a Time of Conflict and Comic
Effects: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Humor in Literature-and of articles
on American literature and culture. A member of the editorial board of HUMOR: International
Journal of Humor Research, Lewis has regularly organized and chaired colloquia
on controversial, provocative, and edgy humor at conferences of the International
Society for Humor Studies (ISHS). In connection with his work as a freelance writer
of op-ed and feature pieces that have appeared in such places as The Washington Post,
The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia
Inquirer, The Globe and Mail, The Chicago Tribune, and Crazy Magazine,
Lewis coined the word "Frankenfood" in 1992 and came up with the idea of blue-state
or neo-secessionism in 2003.
